According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA):
Disruptions in speech are termed dysfluency or stuttering; the frequency, duration, type, and severity of these speech dysfluencies vary greatly from person to person and from speaking situation to speaking situation. School children who stutter experience poorer educational adjustment than normal speakers. Employers believe stuttering decreases employability and interferes with promotion opportunities. Two to three percent of adults stutter. Stuttering is characterized by hesitations, prolongations, and repetitions of speech. Clinical evidence has shown that individuals who stutter benefit from treatment provided by Speech-Language Pathologists.

The Speech-Language Pathologist is responsible for diagnosing and treating people who stutter. Treatment for stuttering can be intensive (many hours every day for several weeks), or extensive (1-2 hours each week for several months or a year). Various treatment approaches are determined by many factors, such as the age of the stutterer, and the nature and severity of the person’s stuttering. Every stutterer, however, and everyone who knows one, knows how this disorder invades a person’s entire life.

As of 2001, an Inaugural Cadre of Fluency Specialists was formed. The 300 professionals accepted nationwide were included based on evidence of their knowledge of the subject, peer recommendations, the extent of their experience (numbers of fluency clients seen), letters from current or former clients, etc. Future fluency specialists accepted will need to provide all of the above, plus pass a thorough examination.
